Thank you to medical student Shaylyn Fahey for kicking off the new year with her member spotlight!

Where did you grow up?

Newtown CT

Why are you pursuing a career in medicine – and is there a specialty you have a passion for?

I am pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine because it allows me to blend my clinical skills and my passion for social advocacy. I have always loved the wide breadth of medicine and in the emergency department I am able to see all different pathologies while also experiencing first-hand the problems that plague the communities in which we work.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

The best piece of advice I have received came from my late mentor Dr. Jeremy Richman and was based of a Nietzsche quote, he would always tell me to “find my why, because those who have a why can endure any how”. I feel like this has continued to be a cornerstone of my journey through medicine.

What advice would you give to new MSV members?

The advice I would give to new members is to not be afraid to use your voice even if you feel like no one is listening. MSV has taught me that even as a medical student my voice, ideas and opinions do matter and are even valued amongst the medical community and beyond. I have met so many great mentors throughout my time in the MSV and have always been encouraged to actively participate and speak up which has allowed me to gain invaluable experience and opportunities.

5.      If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

If I could interview one person it would be Heather McGhee author of “The Sum of Us”. This book is an incredible deep dive into the structure of American society and ideals that brought us to where we are today. I would love to chat with this author about how to move forward intentionally to help dismantle the inequities that are so engraved in our lives.

6.      What are some of your hobbies and/or passions?

Outside of medicine, you can usually find me training for a triathlon, watering my house plants, or attempting any number of recreational sports! I also love to be outside hiking/backpacking or exploring art galleries.

You are happiest when?

When I am by a campfire with friends and family after a day on the lake enjoying the outdoors and everyone’s company.
