Today we spotlight Ishan Perera from our medical student section.

Where did you grow up?
I was born in New York, New York, but moved to Norfolk, VA, when I was about 3. I spent most of my childhood in Norfolk; in fact, I attended elementary, middle, high school, and college on essentially the same street!

Why did you choose a career in medicine?
I chose medicine while I was in high school after volunteering at my local hospital and by chance shadowing the Neurosurgery team. I immediately fell in love and decided I would pursue it.

What is your favorite part about being a physician and why?
I am not a physician just yet, but what I have come to love about the practice of medicine is the interpretation you may offer your patients. I believe, that in many situations, patients are fearful. Patients come to us in their moments of greatest need. Our knowledge, tempered by experience, allows us to increase patient understanding, thus providing the patient with some meaningful control over their health.

Is there a specific event or learning experience that you had that served as an “a-ha” moment or growth opportunity?
Yes, when I first matriculated into medical school a family emergency led me to withdraw. I took a year to support my family, head our restaurant amidst COVID-19, cover medical bills, and support my sister through her freshman year of college. I gained valuable business experience, but more importantly, re-affirmed that family ranked above all opportunity.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
“Chance favors the prepared mind.” – Fred A. Rawlins, II, DO

What advice would you give to new MSV members?
Medical school becomes busy, if not overloading, thus prioritizing your passions is paramount. If you have an interest in advocacy or just wish to make a positive impact, ensure advocacy becomes part of your routine. Utilize the MSV medical student section as an opportunity to involve yourself in advocacy and further temper your skills.

If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
I would like to interview my grandpa on my dad’s side, he passed while I was very young. My only memory of him is as a tall shadow standing in the doorway of my grandparents’ home. Growing up, he was described as a mythical man, I would have loved to hear his stories.

What are some of your hobbies and/or passions?
Recently, my significant other, Sydney and I, have begun training for a half marathon – training together makes something difficult much more fun. I also enjoy hikes with our dog Q, tinkering with things like cars, playing video games, listening to music, and just hanging out with our friends.

Complete this statement, ”I am  happiest when…”
I am happiest when I am around the people I love.
