Where did you grow up?

The suburbs of RVA!

Why did you choose a career in medicine?

I knew I drew strength from interacting with people, hearing their stories, and wanting to improve people’s lives, but I did not know where to go with that.  I candy striped at a local hospital as a teenager which piqued my curiosity in healthcare.  When I was in high school, my father suffered a heart attack, and it cemented my desire to positively impact people’s health.  That set off a cascade of events that led me to pursue medicine.

What is your favorite part about being a physician and why?

The relationship and trust with patients.  It’s a sacred bond that centers on shared values, common humanity, and the willingness to be vulnerable.

Is there a specific event or learning experience that you had that served as an “a-ha” moment or growth opportunity?

When I transitioned from purely clinical medicine to clinical and administrative, I learned the importance of communication and respecting the chain of command within different divisions (clinical, operations, nursing, finance, etc).  A director of operations told me “I wish you had redirected [x-person] to me.  You took care of it, but it undermined my authority.”  A-ha, got it! Her advice has helped me better navigate complex systems.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

“And, you believed her?!”  This comment was direct feedback from a Chief Medical Officer to a young, clinical administrator (me).  The context was about healthy skepticism and believing what is fed to you even if it comes from a trusted source.  The advice, and the manner in which it was given, jolted me to question, to be curious, and to trust my instincts.  I have thought of this conversation hundreds of times during my career since, and it has made me a better leader.

What advice would you give to new MSV members?

There is so much you can do with MSV’s support.  Find your passion and chase after it!

If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Sally Hemmings.  I am a Virginian who strives to understand the complex history of our Commonwealth and nation.   Sally Hemming’s story and that of her family’s stands at the confluence of race, social caste, and what it means to be American.

What are some of your hobbies and/or passions?

Sports - I love playing soccer, basketball, and tennis with my children and friends!

Complete this statement, ”I am happiest when…”

I help someone understand or learn something for the first time.
