Thank you Dr. Sharon Sheffield for being our member spotlight for the month of December!
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. My father was in the Navy, and when I was in the
third grade, my father was transferred to the West Coast. He drove us from
Portsmouth to live in Bremerton, Washington, in Navy Housing. After one year, we
moved to Long Beach, California, and returned to Portsmouth when I was in the 6th
grade.
Why did you choose a career in medicine?
I have always wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. I recently realized
that genetics affected my decision because my mother was a nurse. She worked in a
nursing home, and I would go with her to work to help care for the residents. Later in
life, I learned that my biological father was a medic in the US Coast Guard and wanted
to be a doctor, but that wasn't easy to achieve back then. He was the first African
American to be named Ancient Mariner. He joined the service just after WWII and
retired after 40 years.
What is your favorite part about being a physician and why?
I have associations with my peers and other healthcare professionals. These
associations have enriched my life personally and professionally.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
To be myself.
What advice would you give to new MSV members?
Your peers, patients, younger healthcare providers, family, and friends depend on you
to make a difference. What you say and do is more important than you think.
If you could interview one person (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
My biological father because I never knew him. The limited history that I have is
fascinating, and I’d like to learn more about him. I am grateful for my stepfather. He is
89 years old, and as he ages, he shares more fascinating stories about his life and our
family. I am so fortunate to have him.
What are some of your hobbies and/or passions?
I am a very good tennis player. I love decorating, gardening, hiking, and riding my
bike. I also love good food, music, lakes, rivers, and especially oceans.
You are happiest when?
I am doing the above with friends and/or family.
