Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Burke, Virginia.

Why did you choose a career in medicine?

I chose to be a doctor because as a young child, I had an innate passion to help people.  Over time, I realized the best way to get a direct window to people’s lives and positively impact them is by being a doctor.  Having the ability to lay hands on people and educate and encourage  them to live healthier lives is a true gift that I don’t take lightly.

What is your favorite part about being a physician and why?

Being able to connect to people is my favorite part of my profession. Most people come into the doctor’s office looking for help and they trust and open up to the provider they see. Being able to make their lives a little easier by helping them with their medical concern brings me so much joy!

Is there a specific event or learning experience that you had that served as an “a-ha” moment or growth opportunity?

We as physicians never stop growing and learning.  I learn so much from my patients. I remember graduating from residency, feeling like I was on top of the world, and that I knew what was best for my patients.  I quickly realized although i may know what the literature says, I have to be quick to truly listen to a patient if they don’t want the regimen you are recommending. There may be things going on in their lives (personal, professional, etc) that’s influencing their decision, and so you will need to recommend a difference treatment course in order to gain patient compliance.  Medicine is about treating the whole patient. In this fast paced world, I have to remind myself to slow down and work towards gaining patient trust. Everything else usually follows.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?

Make your family a priority and ensure you spend quality, undivided attention with your children and spouse. If you’re happy at home, your work life and quality will follow.

What advice would you give to new MSV members?

Be willing to seek out various mentors and ask for advice early in your career. Learn from providers that work in different specialties as well as practice settings. Healthcare is constantly advancing and changing, and having a network of people you call friends and mentors is invaluable.

If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Abraham Lincoln.  He struggled with depression and encountered a lot of setbacks on the way to becoming president and yet is arguably our most influential president.  I would love to hear what went through his mind as he dealt with these challenges.

What are some of your hobbies and/or passions?

Weightlifting, running, spending time with my family

Complete this statement, ”I am happiest when…”

There are so many things that make me happy. I can’t just give one answer. I am happiest when I’ve had a great workout to relieve stress, when I’ve made a difference in even one patient’s life, and when I’m playing with my children and spending time with my family.”
